With its origins in the ancient world, debating introduces students to the art of critical thinking and persuasive speech. In 2021, the IEL in Düsseldorf teamed up with a handful of German high schools to launch the Annual Debating Programme. In the current academic year Gymnasium Am Geroweiher was the first participating school outside from Düsseldorf attending the programme with students aged between 15 to 17. The debating programme consists of a training programme delivered by teachers in their respective schools (GaG Interessensmodul Debate Programme), which is supported by five preparatory workshops, a mock debate, and then the final competition. The programme is an English language event which challenges the participants to demonstrate their comprehension of the English language as well as their whole performance as a public speaker.
